What is abdominoplasty surgery?

Abdominoplasty surgery is the professional name for a tummy tuck, a procedure that helps to remove the unwanted ‘bulge’ around the lower abdomen that can occur as a result of:

• Pregnancy and childbirth
• Weight loss
• Natural aging

The tummy tuck procedure removes excess lower abdominal tissue through an incision just above the pubic triangle – which also allows the abdominal muscles to be tightened. Abdominoplasty is a popular procedure, and is often combined with liposuction of the flanks or upper abdomen to improve the contour of the trunk.

Mini-abdominoplasty

A mini-abdominoplasty is suitable for a minority of women who only have a very small amount of excess tissue, often seen in women who have gained and lost weight, and have a Caesarean section scar.

This approach has the benefit of using a shorter incision – but less tissue is removed and it can be difficult to tighten the abdominal muscles with such a small incision.

Extended abdominoplasty

An extended abdominoplasty allows more tissue to be removed from the flanks, in cases where there’s too much skin excess to allow the flanks to be treated with liposuction alone. The extended abdominoplasty is part way between a standard abdominoplasty and full body lift.

Body lift surgery

A body lift procedure is typically reserved for people who have lost a large amount of weight either through a surgical procedure or through diet, and who wish to have excess tissue removed circumferentially from the lower abdomen.

During your first meeting with Dan, he’ll perform a full assessment of your abdominal area in order to help you identify the best type of abdominoplasty surgery for your individual needs.

You’ll have the opportunity to discuss any worries and ask any questions, ensuring that you feel 100% confident in your decision to proceed with your surgery.
